CC we can be jerks too

I originally saw the story of Niall Kennedy teaching Microsoft a hard lesson in hot-linking on SeattlePI. Well, I guess it was supposed to be a lesson in IP licensing. A Microsoft blog direct linked one of Niall’s Creative Commons (CC) licensed images on Flickr without giving credit (violating the license). They also didn’t link back to Flickr, a requirement that is spelled out every time you copy Flickr HTML for embedding. Continue reading

USS Midway

I’m celebrating the holiday in San Diego with Frosty and Gillian’s families (wedding Saturday). One of Frosty’s relatives works at the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum. This morning we showed up before the museum opened and got a guided tour from the PR director. They were expecting 3,000 people that day, so the personal attention was really nice. Midway was commissioned two weeks after the end of WWII and decommissioned after the conclusion of Desert Storm. In Desert Storm it served as the launch platform for the first missions over Iraq. We got to see the Admiral’s quarters which haven’t been opened for public viewing yet. The selection of aircraft is interesting as well. The H-3 Sea King pictured after the break was responsible for recovering 5 Apollo capsules, including Apollo 13. Continue reading

Sweet!

hump
Chelsea just sent me some pictures from when we went rock climbing. I chose this one specifically because I believe her exact instructions for advancing at this point were “hump the shit out of that rock”. Needless to say, I gave it the old college try.

Rain

rain
It has been raining all day and I couldn’t be happier. Las Vegas only gets 10 inches per year so I figure I’ve only got 9 chances left. Rain usually smells fresh, but I swear this smells like something is burning. I used to mutter about the lack of green out here, but now all I see is the green. For what they’ve got to work with, the builders are doing a lot of landscaping.

I spent last weekend in San Diego attending ToorCon. It was a good time with good friends. I’ve posted the first video for Hack-A-Day on Netscape.

Last Wednesday I looked at a house, signed the lease, and moved all of my stuff in by Thursday 2:30AM. It’s 2story 3bdr 2.5ba 2car attached garage 1500sqft 2years old. The house is still in complete disarray. I get hot water next Monday and internet this Saturday. Sadly, that is my order of preference.

Gill is coming out from LA to visit this weekend. I’ve got plenty of room if you ever want to visit Las Vegas.

Flickr Geotagging

flickr geotagging
Flickr recently added location tagging to its list of features. So, like a good Web 2.0 user, I went through and tagged all of my photos. Luckily I’ve only got 264 on Flickr. I haven’t played around with the exploring side of it yet, but I do have one peeve with the tagging. You can specify location privacy per photo, but not per location. I’d like to set the lat/long of my house as private so that every photo I drag there has a location visible to family and friends. Right now I have to change the privacy on each photo by hand to make the location completely invisible. I hope they add this in the future. You can view a map of my photos.
