Last month, Gizmodo posted about the video for The Supermen Lovers – Say No More. I love this style of animated video: a simple constraint, like using the same text, being run through thousands of possible motifs. It reminds me of all the iterations the Munny has seen or the painted helmets of The Vader Project.

The music video for Justice – DVNO makes similar use of iconic logos. The video is composed of 80’s television production logos adapted to the song lyrics. While this video is impressive, they’re lucky they didn’t have to employ the same techniques used to make the original HBO starship logo.

Benny Benassi – Who’s Your Daddy also takes art queues from a specific era and genre. In this case, it’s erotic and exploitation films of the 70’s like Caged Heat.

You can’t really talk about animated logos without mentioning Logorama. From the French animation team H5, the film composed of 3D animated logos won an Oscar in 2010 for Best Animated Short.

By far my favorite use of stylized text and fast cuts in a video is the title sequence for Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void. Art of the Title has a great interview with Tom Kan who assembled all of the type variations and Thorsten Fleisch who did the eletrophotography. They also include the similar title sequence from Jean-Luc Godard’s A Woman Is A Woman.

Kanye West and Hype Williams lifted this style wholesale for use in their All Of The Lights music video. The version embedded above is actually the second cut which was toned down by dropping the opening credits and adding an epilepsy trigger warning.

Finally, I’d like to touch on “kinetic typography” videos. Above is one of the more well known videos featuring the voice of Stephen Fry and animated text by Matt Rogers. The video below was probably the most widely seen of this style. Created for Cee Lo Green’s Fuck You, it spread like wildfire and was most people’s introduction to the catchy tune. This video actually disappeared for a while when the official video was released.
