Every year I get a valentine from my parents. Here’s a picture of the package which includes: weekly letter, week of photocopied sudoku, two packages of cocoa (one with my roommate’s name on it), and a valentine with two red peppers on it saying “Be my valentine ‘Hot Stuff'”. I think the most heart warming part of this is that they spent 87 cents on postage to send me cocoa.
The letter is more readable than usual because they recently got a new iMac. My parents were forced to give up their Panasonic KXP2123 “Quiet Print” dot-matrix printer from ’92 since the new computer doesn’t have a parallel port. They also had to give up their copy of Works that came with Windows 3.1. After hours of struggling with the official HP driver install, I found HPIJS an open-source driver. It seems to work fine, but this letter has some weird character spacing issues. I’m not sure if that is driver or font.
It must be the driver. It is the same old tried and true Times New Roman Font. Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious in another font, but this is going to take some getting used to.

try using a PCL driver for it?

I actually got to play with it today. It seemed to be a weird issue with Abiword.
