Ice Cream

ice cream
(crappy picture through my screen) I don’t know why Las Vegas’s ad campaign isn’t “Our ice cream trucks run year round”. At least I hope they’re year round. I’m guessing they didn’t go with it because it’s a creepy conversion van with Mendozza’s Ice Cream spelled out in those letters for your mailbox. I think I subconsciously fear it because Mendoza was a McBain villain.

Kid ‘n Play

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Yes, I actually went to YouTube in search of this clip of Kid ‘n Play. I was prompted by one of my favorite sequences from Undercover Brother (yes, I own it) where Dave Chappelle initiates the Kick Step with the phrase “Kid ‘n Play nigga”.

Kasabian

kasabian shoot the runner
I haven’t heard a lot of Kasabian, but I certainly enjoy animation. Here’s a link to a big version [via Antville]. Whenever I see something obviously rotoscoped my brain spends a large amount of energy reconstructing what the scene would look like in real life. I think that’s one of the downfalls of the technique.

new office
I’ve got most of my gear set up now. The office floor is still covered in random crap. We had another torrential downpour the other night. I guess all the rain is going to arrive in October. In the free time I’ve been cutting videos from ToorCon for Hack-A-Day. Here’s the keynote by Cory Doctorow. My friends from Midnight Research Labs also released a great tool. I got the slides from Aaron and cut them into the video. They’re both 50 minutes and recomended only for the nerdy. It takes iMovie at least 10 hours to squeeze the ~1Gig MP4 down to 170Meg MP4 while maintaining the 640×480 resolution. I think it looks great. That’s a hell of a lot of time though and I really doubt iMovie 7 is going to add render farm support.

Anchor Commentary

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

I’ve been trying to increase the amount of commentary I’ve been doing. Here are some of the ones I though were interesting:

I’ve started doing some Quality Assurance work for the dev team which means I get to test cool features like comment threading before they go live.

Shorties Watchin’ Shorties

Friday, October 13th, 2006

I enjoyed Shorties Watchin’ Shorties when it was on Comedy Central. It was animated versions of stand-up comedy routines. I like animation and the writing was already known to be funny. Unfortunately Comedy Central felt the need to tie the shorts together with animated segments that really weren’t funny. Lucky for us YouTube just has the good parts. I got on this tangent by looking for this particular clip of Mike Birbiglia: (more…)

Halo

halo
A nice side effect of where my MacBook Pro is sitting in my new office. I’m calling it a halo, but I’m sure on video it looks like I’m being consumed by the holy spirit or worse. (more…)

nUbuntu

nubuntu logo
All the cool kids these days are running Ubuntu. I’ve avoided it for a while since it’s Debian based and I was a Gentoo ricer (Jackass is hardcore). Well, since I’ve gotten my Macs the Gentoo systems have rotted and I decided to install nUbuntu on my laptop.

nUbuntu is a live security CD and features one of my favorite things: Fluxbox. I’ve avoided Ubuntu because it featured Gnome. Learning Linux on a Playstation 2 taught me something very important: keep it fat free. That means no heavy desktop enviroment. Everything on a Linux system can be changed with a text editor so a lightweight windowing system is all you need. A bloated desktop enviroment just leads to mediocrity in its individual tools. It’s the individual programs that really shine on Linux anyway. Like mplayer, a media player that you can throw anything at and it will play. (more…)

Hot water!

new office
I got my gas and internet hooked up today. So, I’ve finally decided to assemble my office out of what you see above. I still haven’t gotten the projector set up since I seem to have a bad circuit in the TV nook. I don’t have a new cell phone number yet, because Verizon hasn’t released the VX9900. That’s all for now. I’ll have pics up once I get more stuff in the right place.

Rain

rain
It has been raining all day and I couldn’t be happier. Las Vegas only gets 10 inches per year so I figure I’ve only got 9 chances left. Rain usually smells fresh, but I swear this smells like something is burning. I used to mutter about the lack of green out here, but now all I see is the green. For what they’ve got to work with, the builders are doing a lot of landscaping.

I spent last weekend in San Diego attending ToorCon. It was a good time with good friends. I’ve posted the first video for Hack-A-Day on Netscape.

Last Wednesday I looked at a house, signed the lease, and moved all of my stuff in by Thursday 2:30AM. It’s 2story 3bdr 2.5ba 2car attached garage 1500sqft 2years old. The house is still in complete disarray. I get hot water next Monday and internet this Saturday. Sadly, that is my order of preference.

Gill is coming out from LA to visit this weekend. I’ve got plenty of room if you ever want to visit Las Vegas.
